Yeah, I said it. YOLO! I like to try and live my life by the yolo mentality. Now for you who live under a rock, yolo is an acronym for "you only live once". People familiar with my generation know the severe overuse of this term to justify doing stupid things.
What I'm talking about is the fact that you only live once, so we should always try to make the most out of our life. "Well yeah Luke, I get that we only live once. I mean I thought it would be assumed that people would want to make the most out of their life. What's your point?" Well, I am glad you asked!
One of the biggest enemies of 'yolo' is fear. I'm going to be talking about fear a lot in this post. There is healthy fear :
and unhealthy fear:
Healthy fear is putting on your seat-belt in a car. Unhealthy fear is meditating on the fact that you could possibly die from an automobile accident. Unhealthy fear is very irrational and can very easily hold you back from doing the things you want to do in life. Whether it be "I'm afraid to ask that girl out. What if she is disgusted by me, and says mean things." or "I can't go hang out with these people. I don't know them well. What if they don't like me." or even "I can't go pray for that person. What if they aren't accepting of it." No matter what it is, fear can be very destructive.
So whenever you are afraid to do something, I recommend you think about why it is that fear is there. Think to yourself "what am I afraid of? What are the chances of that actually happening? Are the consequences even negative? Do the possible cons outweigh the pros?" There is risk in everything, and all good things in life have elements you can be afraid of. You only live once, so don't live life in fear of the maybes.
Don't use 'yolo' as an excuse to do stupid things or get out of a bad situation.
Because then you just look even more foolish than you already had to begin with.
Challenge yourself to do something new anytime you get the chance. There was this study on the human mind concerning aging, and how we view time passing. When we are younger we experience new things all the time, and time feels like it passes very slowly. As you get older and your experiences start to become more and more similar time starts to seemingly pass quickly. That's because of the way your mind processes information.
New information is processed slowly, while old information is processed quickly. This translates to real life experiences. New and exciting experiences feel like they last longer, and whenever you remember they feel longer. However, old experiences (like going to work) feel much shorter. When you think back on to your day at work you don't really remember much happening and it really feels like thirty minutes. To put this into perspective, think about tying your shoes. Whenever you first tied your shoes it took actual time and effort, but now it's second nature and doesn't take any time or mental effort.
Break through the walls of fear and you will start to enjoy your life more and more. I find that the best way to battle fear is to recognize it, and just start thinking opposing thoughts. If you spend your time thinking about possible negative outcomes all the time, just start thinking about all the positive out comes. Instead of thinking "what if this bad thing happens" think "what if this good thing happens." Life is meant to be enjoyed, and fear is a thing that will hold you back from that joy.
You only live once, so make the most out of life. Don't let life become like second nature to you. Switch things up. Comb your hair to the right instead of the left this time; YOLO!
